In a private residential garden, the homeowner had a clear idea of what they did not want: a large, sprawling outdoor kitchen. What they wanted instead was something rarer — a clean, minimalist design that would become the centerpiece of the garden while providing everything needed for outdoor cooking and social gatherings.
This project is a study in restraint. Rather than maximizing size, XIAOZHU focused on combining functionality, aesthetics, and interaction within a compact layout — proving that an outdoor kitchen's value lies not in its footprint, but in how well it brings people together. This case study explains the client's requirements, the design solution, and why a small kitchen with a corner bar can outperform a large one.
Small kitchens are harder to design than large ones. Every element must earn its place, every centimeter must justify itself, and the finished piece must feel complete rather than compromised. That discipline is exactly what makes this project worth studying.

The Challenge: Everything Needed, Nothing Extra
The client's vision combined three ambitions that often pull in different directions.
Function first. The outdoor kitchen had to be equipped with a built-in barbecue grill, a sink, and a preparation area — everything required for real outdoor cooking, not just a decorative feature.
Architecture as important as appliances. The kitchen needed a sleek architectural appearance that matched the modern style of the house. It had to look like it belonged in the garden from the day it was installed.
Social by design. A bar counter was essential — a place where family and friends could gather comfortably during barbecues, with space for several people at the same time. Cooking and socializing had to happen naturally in one place.
On top of all three sat the non-negotiables of any outdoor installation: durability, weather resistance, and easy maintenance over the long term.
A compact, minimalist design also raises the standard for execution. With fewer elements in play, each one is more visible — proportions, finish, and layout logic are all on display, and any weakness would show immediately. Every detail had to be right.
Our Solution: A Kitchen Engineered Around People, Not Size
To achieve this vision, XIAOZHU designed a customized outdoor kitchen in 304 stainless steel, chosen for excellent corrosion resistance and long-term outdoor performance. But the true innovation of this project is not the material — it is the layout.
A 1.4-Meter Main Cabinet with Everything Essential
The functional core is a 1.4-meter main cabinet integrating a built-in barbecue grill and a sink. Every essential cooking function fits within a single, compact unit — preparation area, grill, and cleanup all within arm's reach. The countertop gives the host a full working surface for food prep without adding a centimeter to the layout. There is nothing superfluous, and nothing missing.
A 1.6-Meter Corner Bar That Changes the Space
Connected to the main cabinet is a 1.6-meter corner bar counter, forming a modern L-shaped layout that comfortably accommodates up to four people at the same time. This is where the design does its real work.
The corner bar serves two purposes at once. Practically, it expands the usable workspace, giving the host extra surface for food and service. Socially, it transforms the outdoor kitchen into a hub — a place where guests can sit, chat, and enjoy meals while the host prepares food just steps away. Cooking stops being an activity that isolates the host and becomes part of the gathering itself.
A Unified Dark Gray Identity
Both the cabinet body and the sintered stone countertop were finished in an elegant dark gray color, creating a unified, contemporary appearance that blends naturally with the surrounding architecture and landscape. The single-tone treatment keeps the compact kitchen visually quiet — it reads as one architectural object, not a collection of appliances.

The Result: A Small Kitchen, A Big Role
The completed outdoor kitchen perfectly balances simplicity, functionality, and contemporary design. During the day, its clean lines and dark-toned finish complement the surrounding garden and architecture, creating a refined outdoor setting that looks designed rather than installed. In the evening, the space naturally becomes the heart of family gatherings, where cooking, dining, and conversation come together.
Although compact in size, the integrated corner bar significantly enhances the usability of the space. The project proves that a well-designed outdoor kitchen is not just about cooking — it is about creating meaningful outdoor experiences, and sometimes the most meaningful ones happen in the smallest footprint. The garden has gained a centerpiece that earns its place twice over: a fully equipped cooking station by day, and a natural gathering point every evening.
